Due to the recent news of hurricanes, lots of advice is making the rounds on social media on how best to protect your home and valuables. Some of that advice is not so great, like storing your valuables in the dishwasher. That’s because while dishwashers are very good at keeping (limited) amounts of water in, it’s not so good at keeping large quantities of water out.
“Appliances are not waterproof nor would we endorse such a tip,” Kim Freedman, a representative for Haier-owned GE Appliances, told Business Insider.
Maytag also dismissed the idea in a tweet.
Hello Jane, we do not recommend storing valuables in the Dishwasher.

A repair business owner in St. Petersburg, Fl., also discouraged the idea and told the Tampa Bay Online that he has seen plenty of flooded dishwashers in his time.
Instead, scan and store valuable documents electronically, such as on a flash drive, and take it with you when you evacuate.
