Free Air Conditioner Programs – But Act Fast

Free Air Conditioner ProgramsA number of federal, state, local and non-profit organizations are giving away free air conditioners to those that qualify. However, the time to act is now as units are often given away on a first come, first serve basis. Plus, the program needs to work with area contractors and recipients to schedule installations of the units before hot weather hits.

Those who might qualify include: people over 60, suffer from certain medical conditions, have young children under the age of four at home, disabled, and meet certain income guidelines. Those who have received a free air conditioner during the past few years might also be disqualified. However, check with the program, as each program is different.

How to Find a Free Air Conditioner

Search online for “Cooling Assistance Program” and “Energy Assistance Program” a number of state programs should be in the results.  One such program in New York State is run under the federally-funded Home Energy Assistance Program which also operates a cooling assistance program. Income-eligible households with at least one member having a documented medical condition can have a window air conditioner installed for free. The program works with qualified area contractors who are contracted with the state to install the air conditioning units.

A number of non-profits like the United Way and Salvation Army also have air conditioner giveaways for those who qualify.

Area utility companies also offer free air conditioners. Again, check with your local agency.
