Break me Off a Piece of that Kit-Kat Cake!

Sunday is Easter, and that means a time to be with your family and friends. But this also means time to eat! My family likes to celebrate holidays a couple weeks late, but for Easter this year we actually celebrated it a week early!  On Sunday we had brunch and my aunt made the cutest cake I have ever seen for Easter. It was just adorable, and she told me it was extremely easy to make. It was perfect for Easter.  I asked her how she did it, and she said she discovered the idea from Pinterest! Of course, I should have just guessed, Pinterest is amazing for finding great ideas.

She told me the steps on how to make it and I was shocked at how easy it was.  It looked like it took her hours to make with a lot of effort, but in reality it didn’t take long at all. She said the longest part of it is waiting for the cake to bake and cool before frosting.  If my boyfriend and I weren’t leaving Easter Sunday for a cruise to the Bahamas I would be making this cake for sure! Side note, I am so excited for this cruise, I will be sure to let you all know how it was when I get back with pictures! J Now back to making this cake, I looked up the exact directions online and found two versions, they are exactly the same except for the toppings, so choose which topping you would prefer and make that one!

What you will need:

  • Two- Three (depending on how much cake you want) boxes of any flavor cake mix you prefer
  • 6  Large Packets of Kit- Kats
  • Chocolate frosting enough to cover 2-3 circle cakes
  • Any colored Ribbon

Toppings: Here is where you will choose which you want…

  • Easter colored M&M’s
  • Bunny or chick Peeps
  • Shredded coconut, died green
  • Fresh Fruit

  1. Cook the cakes by following the directions given on the box
  2. Be sure to let the cakes cook completely
  3. Once cakes are cooled, stack one on top of another using the frosting to hold them together. This is where you can put the fresh fruit with the icing. Chocolate and Fresh Strawberries are my personal favorite.
  4. After cakes are stacked with frosting holding them together, ice the outsides of the cake and the top.
  5. Next you need to break the Kit-Kats so that they are separated into two’s, and begin to place them around the side of the cake.
  6. When you have placed the Kit-Kats around the cake you can top with:
    1. Top the cake with M&Ms covering the entire top, and saving room to put two peeps on top.
    2. Or top the cake with the shredded coconut that you have died green, placing Cadbury Eggs around the top of it and a peep
  7. Final step is to tie the ribbon around the cake into a bow!

For extra decoration you can place green shredded coconut around the bottom of the cake to look like grass!  If you need to bring a dessert to Easter dinner, or lunch, why not give this cake a try?  Everyone will think you slaved over this cake for hours, but it will be the easiest cake to make! Enjoy the cake and have a great Easter!

Let the Hunt Begin!

Easter is this weekend, that means time with the family, great food, and Easter egg hunts!  I used to LOVE the egg hunts, it was my favorite part of the whole day, as it is for every child.  As I grew older I loved watching my little cousins do the hunt, to see the joy and excitement on their face while they scoured the back yard looking for the small eggs. In my family we used the fake eggs, and filled them with candy or quarters, things that kids love!

The one year at my grandmas she made the hunt… challenging. My cousins, brother, and I were so used to finding the eggs in the garden or on shelves that were eye level to us that we never thought about looking above us! The one year my grandma had pick up stick grabbers underneath the tree, one for each of the grandkids.  We had no idea why those were out there. Did she want us to grab the eggs with these!?  But then my brother happened to look up in the pine tree above us and in the tree we saw a whole bunch of eggs! With the grabbers we were able to reach them just fine, and it was a great place to hide the eggs.  So if you are planning an Easter egg hunt why not try this idea, and pick up a couple grabbers from Every Appliance Part?  Happy hump day to all my readers, the weekend is almost here! See you all on Friday for the recipe of the week that will leave your guests wanting more on Easter!

It’s Electric!

Take a look around your house; I am assuming you have some sort of electronics around the room you are sitting in.  In my apartment there are TONS of electronics, seeing as how my boyfriend loves to play video games.  If you have electronics, this includes your microwaves and other appliances are you using a surge protector? If not you could be putting your electronics in for some danger.  You should always use a surge protector because it protects your electronics (mainly computers, TVs, etc.) from surges in power.  So you may be asking- “okay, I have no idea what that means…”  Let me start by telling you what a power surge is, in case you do not know, because I honestly had no clue what it actually was either. A power surge is a significant increase in voltage, or the flow of electricity, that goes above the normal household wiring voltage amount.  When the voltage goes about the amounted volts it can cause serious damage on the machine.  After a series of surges it can wear down the overloaded components in the electronic, causing it to simply not work.

It is important that you buy surge protectors for electronics in your house to prevent any of that from happening.  As it happens my boyfriend has them all over the house so we are perfectly protected from any surges that come our way!  So instead of frying your expensive computer or electronic, invest in a surge protector for $9.45! Ten dollars is way cheaper than buying another $2,000.00 TV or computer!  I hope I helped to protect your electronics, and helped to keep money in your wallets! Come back again Wednesday for some more tips and trick in the appliance world.

Slimming Down for Spring!

Well it is supposed to be spring, but as I look out my window this morning I see nothing but snow!  I love snow, but only for a day… on Christmas… then it can stop.  I love spring, the flowers in bloom, the colors coming back instead of seeing the dreary snow and gloom.  But alas, it is still snowing.  With winter over and spring and summer weather coming it is time for me to make a change, it is time for cleaning, fixing things around the house, and of course loosing that weight for summer.  I am going to start by making small changes, starting with variations of my favorite foods!

I love egg salad, but I never knew how many calories where in just ONE sandwich, almost 400! YIKES! Now eggs are great for you, but the mayonnaise you put on them is not.  So while clicking my way through Pinterest I found a recipe for avocado egg salad.  I love avocado and egg salad so I thought I would give it a shot.  It was great! It satisfied my taste buds while helping to keep me full without all the un-needed condiments.

The ingredients you will need:

  • 4 large hard-boiled eggs, chopped
  • 4 hard-boiled egg WHITES, Chopped (throw away the yolks.)
  • 1 medium sized avocado, cut up into pieces
  • 2 Tbsp. fat free Greek yogurt
  • ½ Tbsp. finely chopped chives (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons of red wine vinegar
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of pepper
  • Pinch of garlic powder

What you need to do next:

Combine the egg yolks with the avocado, yogurt, chives, vinegar, garlic powder, salt and pepper.  Mash all of these ingredients, and then mix until the mixture is smooth and creamy.  When the mixture is ready combine in the egg whites, and fold them in gently.  Add salt and pepper to taste!  I used leaves of lettuce to make wraps, but feel free to use whole grain bread or whatever you want! If you are going to store this make sure you keep it in an air tight container, and the place it in the fridge.

While you are in you fridge putting away your left overs, why not check to make sure everything is running ok?  Check to see if the light bulb is working, the door seal is placed properly and not falling off, bins are securely in places, and that the shelves are intact.  These small checks on your refrigerator can help it work for years!

Hopefully spring will be here soon, and there will be more healthy variations of great foods! Have a great weekend and come back Monday for updates on appliance parts!

Spring is Finally Here…But so is Spring Cleaning!

Spring is officially here and I could not be happier! I am so sick of this snowy weather.  But with the spring time comes spring cleaning… which I could do without. After the cleaning and complaining is over, it is all worth it because I love when my apartment is all clean, from ceiling to floor.  When I clean, I clean everything! I dust the ceiling, wash the walls, the floors, every part of the apartment is cleaned.  I started with the kitchen last night, and I noticed after cleaning my dishwasher that there was a scratch and some nicks on the front of the door.  After wiping it down, that is all I could see when I walked by.  So I went into work and I found out that we sell touch up paint for appliances.  I am thrilled!!! Now it will look like brand new again, and my OCD can calm down for a while. While you have spring cleaning on the brain make sure to check out all of cleaning products! Happy spring everyone!

Only you can Prevent Dyer Fires!

It is so important that you properly clean out your dryer; this includes the lint trap and the vent.  Clothes dryers can be a leading cause of fires at home as approximately 15,000 fires are started every single year from dryers.  Dryers are perfectly safe as long as you properly clean them.  The buildup of lint in the dryer can cause the dryer to perform poorly and this can cause the dryer to overheat, raising the chance of a fire starting.  This is why the lint trap and the vent system need to be cleaned out and checked regularly, the lint trap should also be cleaned out after each load of laundry is dried.

There are many different steps you can take to prevent these fires from starting.  Make sure you keep the lint trap clean and free of any lint; make it a habit to clean out the lint filter after each load of laundry is put into the dryer.  Clean out the back of the dryer as well, where lint can also get trapped and you might not know it.  Replace any plastic or vinyl exhaust hoses with flexible metal venting.  Make sure all items you put into the dryer are safe to dry!  We sell a tool at my work that I recently purchased after researching how to prevent these fires. It is a 10 ft. long dryer vent cleaning brush that was created to help the homeowner reach down the long tubing.  This brush is great because I have short arms, so cleaning my dryer vent is a bit of a challenge.  I would have to stick my hand down and just hope I got most of the lint out.  But after I bought this brush it was so much easier to do, all you have to do it stick the brush down and pull back up, bringing a ton of lint back up! It made my mind more at ease knowing that I have completely cleaned the dryer out! Check out our brush and make sure you do all you can to prevent a dryer fire in your home!

Tired of Cooking all Week? Try this Easy Chicken Casserole!

Happy Friday to all my readers out there! This week seemed a bit long to me, so tonight for dinner I want to make something easy.  As you may or may not know, I have a slight addiction to Pinterest.  This is where I find the best DIY things, and the best recipes that I love trying.  My boyfriend is a picky eater so it is great to find such a wide variety of recipes on Pinterest, sometimes I go a little pin crazy though.  Tonight for dinner I am going to try out the Dorito Chicken Casserole recipe! I have made a casserole similar to this before but I made it with 90% fat free ground beef, and everyone that came to dinner LOVED it! I had no left overs and people were asking me for the recipe!  So I decided to give this casserole a try because I love chicken, and I have a weakness for Doritos.

What you will need for this dinner:

  1. 2 cups shredded cooked chicken
  2. 2 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend
  3. 1 can (10oz.) can Cream of Chicken soup
  4. ½ cup milk
  5. ½ cup sour cream
  6. 1 can Ro-tel tomatoes (drained)
  7. ½ packet of taco seasoning
  8. 1 large bag of Doritos (original flavor)
  9. Shredded lettuce (optional)
  10. Diced Tomato (optional)

Cooking Instructions for the Casserole:

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 350° Fahrenheit.
  2. Cook the chicken however you prefer- I am going to use a skillet and cook it that way, this recipe would be great with any left-over chicken as well!
  3. In a large bowl mix together shredded chicken, 1 cup of cheese, cream of chicken soup, milk, sour cream, Ro-tel tomatoes, and taco seasoning. MIX WELL.
  4. Grease a 2 quart casserole dish- I am using a 9×13 baking pan.  Add a layer of crushed Doritos across the bottom. Top the crushed Doritos with a layer of the chicken mixture. Add another layer of crushed Doritos on top of the mixture, and add the remaining cup of cheese.  Add more cheese or Doritos if you want- go crazy it’s the weekend!
  5. Cover the dish at place it into the pre-heated oven for 25-30 minutes until bubbling.  Remove from the oven and top with lettuce, tomato, hot sauce, or whatever you want! Enjoy!

I hope you and your family enjoys this dish! I will be posting pictures on Monday of each step and the result of my casserole for dinner! Happy St. Patties Day everyone, have a great and safe day! Come back on Monday for more appliance parts information and tips!
