Break me Off a Piece of that Kit-Kat Cake!

Sunday is Easter, and that means a time to be with your family and friends. But this also means time to eat! My family likes to celebrate holidays a couple weeks late, but for Easter this year we actually celebrated it a week early!  On Sunday we had brunch and my aunt made the cutest cake I have ever seen for Easter. It was just adorable, and she told me it was extremely easy to make. It was perfect for Easter.  I asked her how she did it, and she said she discovered the idea from Pinterest! Of course, I should have just guessed, Pinterest is amazing for finding great ideas.

She told me the steps on how to make it and I was shocked at how easy it was.  It looked like it took her hours to make with a lot of effort, but in reality it didn’t take long at all. She said the longest part of it is waiting for the cake to bake and cool before frosting.  If my boyfriend and I weren’t leaving Easter Sunday for a cruise to the Bahamas I would be making this cake for sure! Side note, I am so excited for this cruise, I will be sure to let you all know how it was when I get back with pictures! J Now back to making this cake, I looked up the exact directions online and found two versions, they are exactly the same except for the toppings, so choose which topping you would prefer and make that one!

What you will need:

  • Two- Three (depending on how much cake you want) boxes of any flavor cake mix you prefer
  • 6  Large Packets of Kit- Kats
  • Chocolate frosting enough to cover 2-3 circle cakes
  • Any colored Ribbon

Toppings: Here is where you will choose which you want…

  • Easter colored M&M’s
  • Bunny or chick Peeps
  • Shredded coconut, died green
  • Fresh Fruit

  1. Cook the cakes by following the directions given on the box
  2. Be sure to let the cakes cook completely
  3. Once cakes are cooled, stack one on top of another using the frosting to hold them together. This is where you can put the fresh fruit with the icing. Chocolate and Fresh Strawberries are my personal favorite.
  4. After cakes are stacked with frosting holding them together, ice the outsides of the cake and the top.
  5. Next you need to break the Kit-Kats so that they are separated into two’s, and begin to place them around the side of the cake.
  6. When you have placed the Kit-Kats around the cake you can top with:
    1. Top the cake with M&Ms covering the entire top, and saving room to put two peeps on top.
    2. Or top the cake with the shredded coconut that you have died green, placing Cadbury Eggs around the top of it and a peep
  7. Final step is to tie the ribbon around the cake into a bow!

For extra decoration you can place green shredded coconut around the bottom of the cake to look like grass!  If you need to bring a dessert to Easter dinner, or lunch, why not give this cake a try?  Everyone will think you slaved over this cake for hours, but it will be the easiest cake to make! Enjoy the cake and have a great Easter!

Let the Hunt Begin!

Easter is this weekend, that means time with the family, great food, and Easter egg hunts!  I used to LOVE the egg hunts, it was my favorite part of the whole day, as it is for every child.  As I grew older I loved watching my little cousins do the hunt, to see the joy and excitement on their face while they scoured the back yard looking for the small eggs. In my family we used the fake eggs, and filled them with candy or quarters, things that kids love!

The one year at my grandmas she made the hunt… challenging. My cousins, brother, and I were so used to finding the eggs in the garden or on shelves that were eye level to us that we never thought about looking above us! The one year my grandma had pick up stick grabbers underneath the tree, one for each of the grandkids.  We had no idea why those were out there. Did she want us to grab the eggs with these!?  But then my brother happened to look up in the pine tree above us and in the tree we saw a whole bunch of eggs! With the grabbers we were able to reach them just fine, and it was a great place to hide the eggs.  So if you are planning an Easter egg hunt why not try this idea, and pick up a couple grabbers from Every Appliance Part?  Happy hump day to all my readers, the weekend is almost here! See you all on Friday for the recipe of the week that will leave your guests wanting more on Easter!

It’s Electric!

Take a look around your house; I am assuming you have some sort of electronics around the room you are sitting in.  In my apartment there are TONS of electronics, seeing as how my boyfriend loves to play video games.  If you have electronics, this includes your microwaves and other appliances are you using a surge protector? If not you could be putting your electronics in for some danger.  You should always use a surge protector because it protects your electronics (mainly computers, TVs, etc.) from surges in power.  So you may be asking- “okay, I have no idea what that means…”  Let me start by telling you what a power surge is, in case you do not know, because I honestly had no clue what it actually was either. A power surge is a significant increase in voltage, or the flow of electricity, that goes above the normal household wiring voltage amount.  When the voltage goes about the amounted volts it can cause serious damage on the machine.  After a series of surges it can wear down the overloaded components in the electronic, causing it to simply not work.

It is important that you buy surge protectors for electronics in your house to prevent any of that from happening.  As it happens my boyfriend has them all over the house so we are perfectly protected from any surges that come our way!  So instead of frying your expensive computer or electronic, invest in a surge protector for $9.45! Ten dollars is way cheaper than buying another $2,000.00 TV or computer!  I hope I helped to protect your electronics, and helped to keep money in your wallets! Come back again Wednesday for some more tips and trick in the appliance world.

Slimming Down for Spring!

Well it is supposed to be spring, but as I look out my window this morning I see nothing but snow!  I love snow, but only for a day… on Christmas… then it can stop.  I love spring, the flowers in bloom, the colors coming back instead of seeing the dreary snow and gloom.  But alas, it is still snowing.  With winter over and spring and summer weather coming it is time for me to make a change, it is time for cleaning, fixing things around the house, and of course loosing that weight for summer.  I am going to start by making small changes, starting with variations of my favorite foods!

I love egg salad, but I never knew how many calories where in just ONE sandwich, almost 400! YIKES! Now eggs are great for you, but the mayonnaise you put on them is not.  So while clicking my way through Pinterest I found a recipe for avocado egg salad.  I love avocado and egg salad so I thought I would give it a shot.  It was great! It satisfied my taste buds while helping to keep me full without all the un-needed condiments.

The ingredients you will need:

  • 4 large hard-boiled eggs, chopped
  • 4 hard-boiled egg WHITES, Chopped (throw away the yolks.)
  • 1 medium sized avocado, cut up into pieces
  • 2 Tbsp. fat free Greek yogurt
  • ½ Tbsp. finely chopped chives (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons of red wine vinegar
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of pepper
  • Pinch of garlic powder

What you need to do next:

Combine the egg yolks with the avocado, yogurt, chives, vinegar, garlic powder, salt and pepper.  Mash all of these ingredients, and then mix until the mixture is smooth and creamy.  When the mixture is ready combine in the egg whites, and fold them in gently.  Add salt and pepper to taste!  I used leaves of lettuce to make wraps, but feel free to use whole grain bread or whatever you want! If you are going to store this make sure you keep it in an air tight container, and the place it in the fridge.

While you are in you fridge putting away your left overs, why not check to make sure everything is running ok?  Check to see if the light bulb is working, the door seal is placed properly and not falling off, bins are securely in places, and that the shelves are intact.  These small checks on your refrigerator can help it work for years!

Hopefully spring will be here soon, and there will be more healthy variations of great foods! Have a great weekend and come back Monday for updates on appliance parts!
